Top 17 Badass Anime series I recommend.

badass anime series

I know! I know! Your eyes are looking for whether your favorite anime series has made it to the list or not. I will come to that in a moment.

As an art enthusiast who scribbles on paper and writes fiction sometimes, I was fascinated at first by the amount of effort that goes into making Manga and Anime.

The captivating yet layered story-telling fused with top-notch action scenes, badass villains with an impactful back-story, and emotion-evoking music just each frame affected me to the core of my heart.

From Tanjiro’s Shirin blade slicing the heads of demons to Eren’s rumbling to wipe out the outer world, here is my list of Top Badass Anime Series I urge you to watch.

17. Baki The Grappler

baki the grapppler badass anime series
FIRST AIREDJan 9, 2001 to Jun 26, 2001
CREATORKeisuke Itagaki

The sports enthusiast is slightly interested in any form of fighting sports like martial arts, boxing, and jujutsu so this anime is a treat for the enthusiast. Mostly the gym rats who always want to achieve the Hanma’s physique.

The narration depicts the life of Baki Hanma, a skilled martial artist who wants to surpass the strongest man on Earth, his father. Yujiro Hanma, the ogre or Baki’s father is the antagonist of the series with a ruthless demeanor.

The world of underground fighters with each having a relative backstory, good and evil embedded inside really caught my empathy. The badass moment for me in the entire series is when Baki faces Yujiro, his father.

Though the anime is not pleasant to the eyes, the story and execution lead it to the list.

16. Dragon Ball Z

dragon ball z
FIRST AIRED Apr 26, 1989 to Jan 31, 1996
GENREAction, Adventure, comedy, fantasy
CREATORAkira Toriyama

I started the anime journey with Dragon Ball Z, the sequel of the Dragon Ball franchise and many also have started like me if someone belongs to the era of 90s.

The four horses combining the Saiyan saga, Frieza saga, cell saga, and Majin Buu saga complete the story of Dragon Ball Z. In the Saiyaan saga, Goku’s long-lost brother appears who enlightens him of his origins.

The Frieza saga delves Goku into the battle with Tyrant Frieza, Cell saga brings the generation of advanced bio-engineered android and the antagonist cell.

The awe-inspiring super saiyan forms along with intense battle scenes are moments so close to my heart.

15. Gurren Lagann

Gurenn lagann badass anime series
FIRST AIRED Apr 1, 2007 to Sep 30, 2007
GENREAction, Adventure, sci-fi
CREATORHiroyuki Imaishi

Gurren Lagann also known as Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is a mecha anime that gained popularity among the fans over the years within its genre.

Set in a distant future, the plot focuses on Simon and kamina raised in the underground village to escape the threat of gigantic menacing creatures known as Gunmen. Simon, the digger along Kamina and Yoko unearths the Lagann which takes them to the surface of the sky.

With the jaw-dropping animation, I found the story to be exhilarating and ridiculous with epic songs and music soundtracks. The adrenaline-pumping action when in episode 8(spoiler alert) kamina struggles to keep breathing after a battle makes it such an epic anime.

14. Mobile Suit Gundam Seed

Mobile Suit Gundam Seed
FIRST AIRED Oct 5, 2002 to Sep 27, 2003
GENREAction, Drama, Romance, sci-fi
CREATORHajime Yatate and Yoshiyuki Tomino

The mecha anime series is the spin-off of Gundam Seed Legacy, taking a diverse from the main story. Mobile Suit Gundam Seed showcases the Cosmic Era where the rivalry between Earth alliances and space colonies continues.

The story revolves around the coordinator, owning a superior physical and mental capability Kira Yamato. Kira is caught in the turmoil of war that has waged inside his neutral space colony.  Kira becomes a reluctant pilot of mobile suit gundam to lead the battle which arrives at his doorsteps.

Ever since a kid, the mecha battles intrigued 90s kids like me. The first battle when Kira takes over the mobile suit gundam scene is exhilarating and compelling.

13.Cowboy Bepop

Cowboy Bepop
FIRST AIREDApr 3, 1998
GENREAction, Adventure, Sci-fi
CREATORShinchiro Watanabe

Again I was thrust into the anime series in the lockdown period, Cowboy Bebop is considered one of those cult classic anime if you haven’t watched it society might not accept it. Just kidding.

The story of bounty hunters named Spike and Jet hunting across space in the year 2071 where human civilization expanded over the galaxy. The duo aboard the ship Bebop while Spike is a martial artist with a traumatized past and jet black, a non–sense former cop leading the Bebop.

The best part I loved about the cowboy bebop is information spread in breadcrumbs, not single flashbacks or anything. Each episode represents a bounty adventure mixed with jazz music and fluid action sequences.

The perfectly choreographed fight between Spike and his former ally Vicious with haunting music is a must-watch. The hacking scenes add a taste of cyberpunk flair to the story.

FIRST AIRED Apr 4, 2006

CREATORHideaki Sorachi

At first, I entered this satirical realm thinking just a random samurai doing comic things but as the intense arc built over the episodes. Then I realized, why my friend nudged me repeatedly to watch this badass anime series.

The Gintama series portrays the protagonist Gintoki, a silver-haired self-acclaimed samurai who along with his members Shinpachi and Kagura does the odd jobs. Set in the historical Edo period, Aliens named Amanto Invaded the earth where samurais are not required.

What sets apart the anime is its unapologetic parody theme which even proves to bring controversy. But the transition from extreme laughs and humor to emotionally charged story arcs.

Gintoki may seem like a guy roaming around with a sword but when the arcs of Yoshiwara in Flames arc or the Shinsengumi crisis arc begins, Gintoki’s sword skills are a sight to behold.

With catchy openings and enigmatic sword fight animation, Gintama fits the list of badass anime series.

11.Death Note

Death Note
FIRST AIREDOct 4, 2006 to Jun 27, 2007
GENRESupernatural, suspense, Psychological
CREATORTsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata

When I first encountered “Death Note” at a young age probably in 2019, I was like what the hell is this? The mind-bending plot twist along with its unique premise intrigued me so much and so I finished the entire series in a day.

The duo creators Tsugumi and Takeshi’s Death Note provide a gripping psychological thriller along with crime fiction and Supernatural Drama.

The plot delves into 17-year-old Light Yagami, who stumbles upon the Death Note from the Death god or Shinigami Ryuk.

With an ambition to fight crime and eradicate criminals, Light uses the description inscribed on the note. If the writer of the death note inscribes a name and pictures the person, that person will face the same death as described on the note.

As Detective L suspects the sudden death of criminals in a patterned way, the game of Cat and Mouse begins. The dark laugh of Light after executing his mind games, the opera music complementing the intense scenes, and the dark color anime make it a badass anime series.

10.Hunter x Hunter

Hunter x Hunter
FIRST AIREDOct 2, 2011
GENREAction, Adventure, Fantasy
CREATORYoshihiro Togashi

What amazes me the most is the amount of recognition that Hunter x Hunter received over the years is incredibly low. Hunter x Hunter emerges as an ultimate badass anime with every aspect executed to perfection.

The narration follows a young boy named Gon Frecess abandoned by his father at an early age. As his father chose the path of treasure haunting and never returned, Gon embarks on a journey to seek his father and simultaneously chooses the path that his father opted for.

The multitude of themes friendships, and bonds Strengthen with other impactful characters like Killua, LeoRio, and Kurapika. As for the art and animation styles deliver amazingly throughout the series and soundtracks improve with the episodes.

One of the scenes that makes it one of the badass anime series when the confrontation between Netero and Chimera Ant king, Mereum.

9.Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure
FIRST AIREDOct 6, 2012 to Apr 6, 2013
GENREAction, Adventure, Supernatural
CREATORHirohiki Araki

Hirohiki Araki’s generational tale transcends through ages starting with its long-running manga. Although its Original video animation was released in 1993, I would count this series.

The narration delves into the journey of Jojo or the members of the Joestar family across the generations, with the protagonist’s POV shifting from time to time. Set in the 19th century Jonathan Joestar comes face to face with his half-brother Dio Broando.

As the anime covers the Phantom Blood arc the rivalry between Jonathan and Dio sets the tone for the entire series. I vouch for the battle tendency arc to watch.

With great animation mixed with a psychedelic touch of color, for me, it stands out. The Rock song “Roundabout” is evidence of the music of this anime, with all combined Jojo’s adventure is a big yes.

8. Hellsing Ultimate

Hellsing Ultimate
FIRST AIREDFeb 10, 2006 to Dec 26, 2012
GENREAction, Horror, Supernatural
CREATORKouta Hirano

The original video Animation Hellsing Ultimate is an adaptation of Hellsing manga and Anime. The Ova tops the anime that was released earlier which wasn’t any good in my opinion. In shorts, It was meh.

The story focuses on the badass main character vampire Alucard once known as Dracula, who is a slave to the Hellsing organisation. The organization vows to protect England from the supernatural beings that rule the streets.

As Badass Alucard’s name sounds, he tortures his enemy brutally, barely killing anyone without any torture. The Ruthless hero’s boss or master Integra another character to keep an eye for.

The brutal action scenes filled with blood, Alucard stripping off the rival vampire’s dignity and the battle of London from episodes 5 to 7 just makes it masterful to watch.

7. Naruto Shippuden

 Naruto Shippuden
FIRST AIREDFeb 15, 2007
GENREAction, Adventure, Fantasy
CREATORMasashi Kishimoto

Ever since I watched Naruto saying, “Somebody told me I am a failure but I’ll prove them wrong.” It stayed with me and it will till I breathe the last air into my lungs.

The continuation of Naruto, Naruto Shippuden is a classic anime from the vault that transcends through the various ages of followers. Naruto Shippuden follows the story of Naruto‘s homecoming after two years of vigorous training with Jiraiya Sensei.

Many may not agree with this recommendation but Boy! I have my reasons. From the Blue Bird opening theme to the ultimate villain arcs of Madara Uchiha, Obito, and The Akatsuki, each one is phenomenal in its way.

The deadliest Itachi Uchicha and Sasuke’s revenge, the brother’s heart-shattering moments, and the philosophy are mesmerizing. The fight between Naruto and Pain makes it a total badass anime series.

6.One Punch Man

One punch man
FIRST AIRED Oct 5, 2015
GENREAction, Comedy

The action-filled anime with a satirical take on pretty much every shounen genre where the protagonist fails multiple times to rise and shine to defeat the antagonist at the end and achieve Victory.

One Punch Man dictates the life of amazingly overpowered Saitama, who achieved it all through his immense amount of training. But with unparalleled powers, he surpasses any monsters with a single punch, and the dream of being a superhero dies at his feet.

With his devoted cyborg disciple Genos, seeking revenge for his village’s destruction Saitama embarks on a journey to join a group of heroes.

Even though climax scenes are predictable, the sole spectacular fight scenes like Saitama vs Boros, the Alien Conqueror, or the Saitama vs Speed-o-Sound Sonic are visually stunning.

This anime serves the whole purpose of its creation i.e. Enjoyment. This makes it to the list of badass anime series.

5.My Hero Academia

my hero academia
FIRST AIRED Apr 3, 2016
CREATORKohei Horikoshi

My Hero Academia also known as Boku no Hero Academia talks about the dream of a man, the stakes of being a superhero, and the strategic actions during a fight.

May be inspired by the hundreds of Superhero comics. But in a generic superhero story a hero is born with a power separating him/her from other regular people. Now rotate the table 180 degrees, in this world each one has some sort of power known as Quirks except the protagonist Izuku Midoriya. What will he do?

Despite his inability, Izuku is inspired by the greatest of All Time, Almighty. But life throws its stones at him from time and time and Izuku realizes the true cost of becoming a superhero.

With impeccable visual and fluid animations, Izuku and Katsuki’s rivalry stands out. Sports Festival Arc from season 2 and the USJ attack arc raise the bar of the scenes and the story.

For the shounen genre, My Hero Academia delivers again it depends on the person and their perspective.

4.Demon Slayer

Demon Slayer
FIRST AIREDApril 6, 2019
GENREAction, Fantasy
CREATORKoyoharu Gotouge

Demon Slayer also known as Kiemetsu No Yaiba is the adaptation of much 32-volume Manga of Koyoharu Gotouge. Manga and Anime took over the internet like wildfire with its popularity.

Set in the historical time of the Taisho Era in Japan, the story follows the life of Tanjiro Kamado and his family living on a remote mountain. Shouldering the family responsibilities, Tanjiro often sells Charcoal on the down market to feed his family.

Upon one such day, Tanjiro finds his family is slaughtered by a demon and his sister Nezuko turns into a demon. To turn his younger sister into a human again and slaughter the demons He joins the Demon Slayer Corps.

One of the reasons I recommend it as a badass anime series is because it amalgamates story, art, and music blending like water and milk. The heart-breaking demon’s back story along with breath-taking animation with a high budget.

The character arcs of Tanjiro, Nezuko, and till now explored Hashira’s story all seem down to perfect. It may sound biased as I am a fanboy, but for me, it is and will in future a badass anime series.

3.Attack on Titan

Attack on Titan
FIRST AIREDApr 7, 2013
GENREAction, Drama, Suspense
CREATORHajime Isayama

Hajime Isayam’s highly anticipated legacy carved a name in the world and reached almost every corner and anime enthusiast. Whether a rookie or an elite no matter what everyone was on the edge of their seat like I was.

Attack on Titan or Shingeki No Kyojin is famous for its intricately woven story along with unexpected plot twists, gore deaths, and most importantly character developments.

The narration focuses on the protagonist Eren Yeager in a dystopian island behind the colossal walls to protect the remaining humans from the man-eater Titans.

One such breach leads to Eren’s mother and human’s annihilation which propels the story of Eren’s vengeance towards the outer world for freedom.

The Rumbling music, betrayals, politics, and the unrequited romance between characters sum up a series so badass that it will go down in history as one of the greatest.

2.Vinland Saga

Vinland Saga
FIRST AIREDJuly 7, 2019
GENREAction, Adventure, Drama
CREATORMakoto Yukimura

Critically acclaimed for its historical accuracy Makoto Yukimura’s Vinland Saga reverberates in the hearts of fans like me who personally enjoyed the Netflix’s Vikings. After the immense applause of Attack on Titan’s Wit studio breached their standards of peak animation Vinland Saga.

The historical era travels back to the era of 1013 AD of Vikings of Norse. They raided the Englishmen and beat the drums at their heart.

The plot revolves around a young Thorfinn who seeks for the land of Vinland but first, he must attain revenge and kill Askeladd, the man who deceived his father Thors and killed him.

The series showcases barbarism and violence but that’s not all, beautifully choreographed fight scenes, the serene landscapes, and each death defining its reasons.

Whether the transformation of Thorfinn or Prince Canute, the cruel world revolving around Vikings has despair, pain, and deaths rather than any naked women to seduce anyone. That’s why it proves to be a badass anime series.

FIRST AIRED Oct 8, 1997 to Apr 1, 1998
GENREAction, Adventure, Drama, Horror, Fantasy
CREATORKentaro Miura

90s Era though lacked its animation quality and was criticized for it. But never fell short with its depth of storytelling. Berserk sets the high standard of anime for me and it’s manga even more.

The psychological dark fantasy captures the life of Black swordsman Guts in the medieval era. With his traumatized past flashing right before his eyes most of the time. Guts marked with a cursed symbol, joins the Band of the Hawk after losing a one-to-one battle with Griffith, the enigmatic leader of the band.

Though skilfully it covers some part of the manga, scenes blended with Susuma Hirawa’s daunting soundtrack when Gut demonstrates his unmatched skills in the battle of Doldrey or Guts taking on Apostles all by himself.

As the theme of dreams and despair, evil and haunting outplay, the series isn’t for the faint-hearted or young kids. With one of the notorious and greatest cliffhangers of all time Berserk series is a psychologically badass anime series.
